The Earth can be represented in different ways:

 - A map is a picture of the Earth´s surface. It´s flat and it has a legend wich gives us information about the map.

There are different types of maps:

  • Physical maps: they incluyde mountains, rivers, seas and oceans.

  • Political maps: they show the borders of countries, autonomous communities or provinces.

  - An atlas is a book of maps

Plans include a lot of information. They have symbols and a key to represent different places.

Countries have different shapes and sizes.

Orientation is when we know where we are in the Earth. The cardinal points help us to follow directions.

The cardinal points are: North (N), South (S), East (E)and West (W).

We can find our position by:

- Looking at the Sun: the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

- Using a compass: the cardinal points are marked on a compass. The needle always points to the north.
