PARTS OF THE BODY

LANDSCAPES

landscape is an area with different landforms. 

landform is a natural element, such as mountains, rivers or cliffs. 

In Spain, we can distinguish: mountain landscape, flat landscape and coastal landscape.

A) MOUNTAIN LADSCAPE

mountain is an elevated landform.

A mountain has three different parts:  the peak at the top, the slopes (sides of the mountain) and the foot at the bottom.


mountain range is a group of mountains forming a line. 


valley is a low area in between the mountains.

Rivers start in the mountains and end in the sea. 

The course of a river has got three parts: upper coursemiddle course and lower course.


B) FLAT LANDSCAPE

plain is an area of flat land. Plains have big fields and hills (small elevations).

Sometimes, there are wide rivers in the plains and the water runs slowly as the land is flat. 

The land around rivers is very fertile. There are often fieldsfarms and forests.

People live in villages, towns and cities on the planes. There are factories near towns and cities. 


C) COASTAL LANDSCAPE:

The coast is the land that is in contact with the sea. 

Cape: land into the sea.


Gulf: large area of sea between two capes.

Bay: small area of sea between two capes. 


Beach: flat area with sand next to the sea.


Port: place where boats can park.



Island
: area of land completely surrounded by water.


Archipelago: group of islands.



We can also classify landscapes into: rural landscape and urban landscape.

PLANTS

  PLANTS

Plants are living things. They need sunlight, water and air. Las plantas son seres vivos. Necesitan la luz del sol, agua y aire.

Plants have a life cycle: plants are born, grow, reproduce and die. Las plantas tienen un ciclo vital: nacen, crecen, se reproducen y mueren.





PARTS OF A PLANT

These are the parts of a plant: Estas son las partes de una planta:


1.- The roots are underground and fix the plant to the ground. They take in water  and nutrients from the soil. Las raíces están por debajo de la tierra y sujetan la planta al suelo. Toman agua y nutrientes del suelo.

2.- The stem holds the plant up and transport the nutrients around the plant. El tallo sostiene la planta y transporta los nutrientes por todas sus partes.

3.- The leaves take in air and sunlight. Las hojas toman el aire y la luz del sol.

4.- The flowers are colourful and produce seeds, which sometimes turn into fruit. Las flores son coloridas y producen semillas, que se transforman en frutos.
Flowers have different parts:Las flores tienen distintas partes.
  • The corolla is the group of petals. La corola es el grupo de pétalos. 
  • The stamen and the pistil are the reproductive parts of the plant. El estambre y el pistilo son las partes reproductoras de la planta.
  • The calyx is the group of sepals (leaves) at the base of the flower. El cáliz es el grupo de sépalos en la base de la flor. 
We can eat different parts of a plant: Podemos comer las diferentes partes de una planta:

Broccoli and cauliflower are flowers. El brócoli o la coliflor son flores.

Carrots and onions are roots. Las zanahorias y las cebollas son raíces.

Asparagus and leeks are stems. Los espárragos y los puerros son tallos.

Lettuces are leaves. Las lechugas son hojas.





 TYPES OF PLANTS

Depending on their stem, plants can be: Dependiendo de su tallo, las plantas pueden ser:

1. Trees have a long, thick and hard stem called trunk and branches. Los árboles tienen un tallo largo, grueso y duro llamado tronco y ramas.

    - Evergreen trees have green leaves all year round. Los árboles de hoja perenne tienen hojas verdes todo el año.

    - Deciduous trees lose their leaves in autumn after changing colour. In spring, they grow new leaves. Los árboles de hoja caduca pierden sus hojas en otoño. En primavera, brotan nuevas hojas. 

2. Bushes have lots of short and thin stems or branches. Los arbustos tienen tallos cortos y finos o ramas.

3. Grass has lots of thin and flexible stems. La hierba tiene muchos tallos finos y flexibles.

                            







According to how they grow, plants can be:

Wild plants grow in nature in places with soil. They get water from the rain. Las plantas silvestres crecen en la naturaleza en lugares con suelo.

Cultivated plants grow with the help of humans. Las plantas cultivadas crecen con ayuda de los humanos.

OUR COUNTRY

Spain borders Portugal in the west, France and Andorra in the north and Morocco in the south. 



      
Spain is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Bay of Biscay (Cantabric Sea) and the Atlantic Ocean. 

- Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities (Ceuta and Melilla).

- Autonomous communities are divided into provinces. 
- Some autonomous communities have more than one province and some only have one province. There are 52 provinces in total.
- Autonomous community has got: a flaga president and a parliament


There are many cities, towns and villages in a province.

POPULATION

- The population is all the people living in a place

- We can classify population according to:
  • Gender: male (boys and men) and female (girls and women). 

  • Age groups: children(0-12), adolescents(13-20), adults  (21-70) and older people (+70).

  • Where they liverural population (they live in villages) and urban population (they live in towns and cities).

CULTURE

- Culture of a place is made up of language, food, festivals, music, dance, monuments, and museums.

- The official language in Spain is Spanish.

- There are also other co-official languages:
  • Galician: Galicia.
  • Basque: Basque Country and Navarra.  
  •  Catalan: Catalonia and Balearic Island.
- In some autonomous communities, they speak other languages too: Valencian (Comunidad Valenciana), Aranés (Lérida), Aragonés  (Aragón) and  Asturiano (Asturias).
